Ph.D. Minor
The purpose of the minor is to give breadth to a Ph.D. major. The course work for the minor is in addition to the course work required for the Ph.D. major. A Ph.D. Minor Agreement Form must be on file with the Graduate Coordinator prior to taking the preliminary examination. In consultation with their advisers, LCA students can choose between two kinds of minors: Option A and Option B. Students in other Ph.D. programs are welcome to minor in LCA.

LCA Ph.D. Minor
Students from other departments who wish to minor in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia must complete 12 credits 300 level and above with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia. Such students are required to take one course in linguistics or literature and one course in religion or philosophy. Any other courses to fulfill the Minor requirement are selected in prior consultation with the Department's minor adviser, who is designated as such by the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia and is authorized to sign the Ph.D. Minor Agreement Form.

Courses cross-listed in a student's major department and the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia do not count toward the minor requirement. Elementary and Intermediate Language courses or "Directed Study" courses are not accepted toward the fulfillment of the minor requirement in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia.

Ph.D. Minor Option A
a) A minimum of 10 credits in a single department/major field of study. Refer to the individual department for specific requirements; many departments require more than 10 credits.

b) Approval from the major professor and the minor department.

In addition to Option A minors in departments or programs that offer graduate degrees, the Graduate School has authorized minors in other areas. Refer to Graduate School Catalog for more information.

Ph.D. Minor Option B (distributed)
a) A minimum of 12 credits in two or more departments.

b) Approval from the major professor and department chair.
